Chili Base Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey or beef, or 2 cups chopped mushrooms for veg-friendly substitute for vegetarian option
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 can diced tomatoes 14.5 oz can
  • 1 can tomato sauce 8 oz can
  • 1 can beans, rinsed any variety
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat oil in a pot, then cook onion until soft. Stir in garlic.
  2. Add meat or mushrooms and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in spices, then add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beans.
  4. Simmer for 15 minutes, taste, and adjust salt.
  5. Top with shredded cheese, sour cream, and green onions.

Notes

For a spicier version, add chipotle peppers. To sweeten, stir in orange juice. For a creamy white chicken chili, incorporate white beans and cream cheese.
